More Bad News For The Watch Industry (Which Isn't Necessarily Bad)

It has now become common knowledge that this past year has been one of the worst on record for the watch industry. Data released by Bloomberg and the FHS (Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH) show that sales have dropped over 45% between 2015 and 2016, and the level of Switzerland’s watch exports dropped 11 percent during the first 10 months of the year.

Apple Watch Series 2

It wasn’t a big surprise, but today Apple released the second version of the Apple Watch, called Series 2.

The big change in my opinion is that the watch is swim proof. It is water resistant to 50m. But, more than that, it still has a speaker to produce sound, but the speaker itself is used to push the water that enters out. Quite innovative.

The new watchOS3 will be included, and includes a 2nd generation dual core processor that is up to 50% faster, a new GPU up to 2x faster, and this opens up a whole new world for developers and the like.

Rolex: Masters of illusion, not innovation (and how we fall for it)

Baselworld 2015 has come and gone, and while some cool new watches were introduced, it was also disappointing in some very specific ways.

But something that has been infuriating has been this “buzz” around the new movement released by Rolex: the 3255 and it’s variants.

As Rolex has put it, this new movement sets a “new standard of performance” is “2X more precise than an official chronometer” has a “50% greater power reserve at 70 hours” and contains “90% new components”.

All of that is absolutely true.

So why is that infuriating?

Because its only true for Rolex, NOT for the watch industry as a whole.

Apple Watch

Apple just completed their annual Apple Event, and among other things they introduced the Apple Watch.

While I'm not necessarily endorsing it, because my opinion of "smart watches" is that they, like the tuning fork and quartz watch before it, will never be able to replace a mechanical watch when it comes to overall style, luxury and horological satisfaction, but thanks to the introduction of the Apple Watch, and only the Apple Watch, I do think smart watches are here to stay.

This is because the Apple Watch is unlike all other smart watches, the same way the original iPhone was unlike all other phones.
